1  My³⁴⁵⁰ brethren,⁸⁰ be¹⁰⁹⁶ not³³⁶¹ many⁴¹⁸³ masters,¹³²⁰ knowing¹⁴⁹² that³⁷⁵⁴ we shall receive²⁹⁸³ the greater³¹⁸⁷ condemnation.²⁹¹⁷

1  내 형제들아 너희는 선생 된 우리가 더 큰 심판 받을 줄을 알고 많이 선생이 되지 말라

1  My brothers, do not be many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

1  나의 형제들아, 너희는 많은 선생들이 되지 말라. 이는 우리가 더 큰 정죄를 받을 줄 앎이니라.

2  For¹⁰⁶³ in many things⁴¹⁸³ we offend⁴⁴¹⁷ all.⁵³⁷ If any man¹⁵³⁶ offend⁴⁴¹⁷ not³⁷⁵⁶ in¹⁷²² word,³⁰⁵⁶ the same³⁷⁷⁸ is a perfect⁵⁰⁴⁶ man,⁴³⁵ and able¹⁴¹⁵ also²⁵³² to bridle⁵⁴⁶⁸ the³⁵⁸⁸ whole³⁶⁵⁰ body.⁴⁹⁸³

2  우리가 다 실수가 많으니 만일 말에 실수가 없는 자면 곧 온전한 사람이라 능히 온 몸도 굴레 씌우리라

2  For in many things we all offend. If anyone does not offend in word, the same is a full-grown man, able also to bridle the whole body.

2  우리 모두는 많은 일에 실수 하나니, 만일 말에 실수가 없는 사람이 있다면 그 사람은 온전한 사람이며 온 몸도 제어할 수 있느니라.

3  Behold,²⁴⁰⁰ we put⁹⁰⁶ bits⁵⁴⁶⁹ in¹⁵¹⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ horses'²⁴⁶² mouths,⁴⁷⁵⁰ that they⁸⁴⁶ may obey³⁹⁸² us;²²⁵⁴ and²⁵³² we turn about³³²⁹ their⁸⁴⁶ whole³⁶⁵⁰ body.⁴⁹⁸³

3  우리가 말을 순종케 하려고 그 입에 재갈먹여 온 몸을 어거하며

3  Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, so that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.

3   보라, 우리가 말들을 복종하게 하려고 그 입에 재갈을 물려 그것들의 온 몸을 제어하느니라.

4  Behold²⁴⁰⁰ also²⁵³² the³⁵⁸⁸ ships,⁴¹⁴³ which though they be⁽⁵⁶⁰⁷⁾ so great,⁵⁰⁸² and²⁵³² are driven¹⁶⁴³ of⁵²⁵⁹ fierce⁴⁶⁴² winds,⁴¹⁷ yet are they turned about³³²⁹ with⁵²⁵⁹ a very small¹⁶⁴⁶ helm,⁴⁰⁷⁹ whithersoever^{3699, 302} the³⁵⁸⁸ governor^{3730, 2116} listeth.¹⁰¹⁴

4  또 배를 보라 그렇게 크고 광풍에 밀려가는 것들을 지극히 작은 키로 사공의 뜻대로 운전하나니

4  Behold also the ships being so great, and driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small rudder, where the impulse of him steering desires.

4    또한 배들을 보라. 그렇게 크고, 거친 바람에 밀려 가도 지극히 작은 키로 키잡이가 원하는 곳 어디로든지 돌려지느니라.

5  Even²⁵³² so³⁷⁷⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ tongue¹¹⁰⁰ is²⁰⁷⁶ a little³³⁹⁸ member,³¹⁹⁶ and²⁵³² boasteth great things.³¹⁶⁶ Behold,²⁴⁰⁰ how great²²⁴⁵ a matter⁵²⁰⁸ a little³⁶⁴¹ fire⁴⁴⁴² kindleth!³⁸¹

5  이와같이 혀도 작은 지체로되 큰 것을 자랑하도다 보라 어떻게 작은 불이 어떻게 많은 나무를 태우는가

5  Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. Behold how little a fire kindles how large a forest!

5  이와 같이 혀도 작은 지체지만 큰 일들을 자랑하느니라. 보라, 작은 불이 얼마나 큰 것을 태우는가!

6  And²⁵³² the³⁵⁸⁸ tongue¹¹⁰⁰ is a fire,⁴⁴⁴² a world²⁸⁸⁹ of iniquity;⁹³ so³⁷⁷⁹ is²⁵²⁵ the³⁵⁸⁸ tongue¹¹⁰⁰ among¹⁷²² our²²⁵⁷ members,³¹⁹⁶ that it defileth⁴⁶⁹⁵ the³⁵⁸⁸ whole³⁶⁵⁰ body,⁴⁹⁸³ and²⁵³² setteth on fire⁵³⁹⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ course⁵¹⁶⁴ of nature;¹⁰⁷⁸ and²⁵³² it is set on fire⁵³⁹⁴ of⁵²⁵⁹ hell.¹⁰⁶⁷

6  혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고 생의 바퀴를 불사르나니 그 사르는 것이 지옥 불에서 나느니라

6  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. So the tongue is set among our members, spotting all the body and inflaming the course of nature, and being inflamed by hell.

6    혀는 불이요, 죄악의 세상이라. 그처럼 혀는 우리 지체들 가운데 있으면서 온 몸을 더럽히며, 또 일생을 불태우나니, 곧 지옥의 불에서 태우느니라.

7  For¹⁰⁶³ every³⁹⁵⁶ kind⁵⁴⁴⁹ of beasts,²³⁴² and²⁵³² of birds,⁴⁰⁷¹ and⁵⁰³⁷ of serpents,²⁰⁶² and²⁵³² of things in the sea,¹⁷²⁴ is tamed,¹¹⁵⁰ and²⁵³² hath been tamed¹¹⁵⁰ of mankind:^{442, 5449}

7  여러 종류의 짐승과 새며 벌레와 해물은 다 길들므로 사람에게 길들었거니와

7  For every kind of animals, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of sea-animals, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

7  모든 종류의 짐승들과 새들, 뱀들, 바다 속에 있는 것들은 사람에 의해 길들여지며 또 길들여져 왔으나

8  But¹¹⁶¹ the³⁵⁸⁸ tongue¹¹⁰⁰ can¹⁴¹⁰ no³⁷⁶² man⁴⁴⁴ tame;¹¹⁵⁰ it is an unruly¹⁸³ evil,²⁵⁵⁶ full³³²⁴ of deadly²²⁸⁷ poison.²⁴⁴⁷

8  혀는 능히 길들일 사람이 없나니 쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라

8  But no one can tame the tongue, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

8    혀를 길들일 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없나니 억제할 수 없는 악이요, 죽이는 독이 가득하도다.

9  Therewith^{1722, 846} bless²¹²⁷ we God,²³¹⁶ even²⁵³² the Father;³⁹⁶² and²⁵³² therewith^{1722, 846} curse²⁶⁷² we men,⁴⁴⁴ which are made¹⁰⁹⁶ after²⁵⁹⁶ the similitude³⁶⁶⁹ of God.²³¹⁶

9  이것으로 우리가 주G2316 아버지를 찬송하고 또 이것으로 하나님의G2316 형상대로 지음을 받은 사람을 저주하나니

9  By this we bless God, even the Father. And by this we curse men, who have come into being according to the image of God.

9   그것으로 우리가 하나님(야훼)이신 아버지를 송축하고, 또 그것으로 우리가 하나님(엘로힘)의 모습대로 만들어진 사람을 저주하느니라.

10  Out¹⁵³⁷ of the³⁵⁸⁸ same⁸⁴⁶ mouth⁴⁷⁵⁰ proceedeth¹⁸³¹ blessing²¹²⁹ and²⁵³² cursing.²⁶⁷¹ My³⁴⁵⁰ brethren,⁸⁰ these things⁵⁰²³ ought⁵⁵³⁴ not³⁷⁵⁶ so³⁷⁷⁹ to be.¹⁰⁹⁶

10  한 입으로 찬송과 저주가 나는도다 내 형제들아 이것이 마땅치 아니하니라

10  Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

10    같은 입에서 축복과 저주가 나오는도다. 나의 형제들아, 이렇게 되어서는 아니되느니라.

11  Doth ⁽³³⁸⁵⁾ a fountain⁴⁰⁷⁷ send forth¹⁰³² at¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ same⁸⁴⁶ place³⁶⁹² sweet¹⁰⁹⁹ water and²⁵³² bitter?⁴⁰⁸⁹

11  샘이 한 구멍으로 어찌 단 물과 쓴 물을 내겠느뇨

11  Does a fountain send forth at the same hole the sweet and the bitter?

11    샘이 같은 곳에서 단물과 쓴물을 낼 수 있느냐?

12  ⁽³³⁶¹⁾ Can¹⁴¹⁰ the fig tree,⁴⁸⁰⁸ my³⁴⁵⁰ brethren,⁸⁰ bear⁴¹⁶⁰ olive berries?¹⁶³⁶ either²²²⁸ a vine,²⁸⁸ figs?⁴⁸¹⁰ so³⁷⁷⁹ can no³⁷⁶² fountain⁴⁰⁷⁷ both yield⁴¹⁶⁰ salt²⁵² water⁵²⁰⁴ and²⁵³² fresh.¹⁰⁹⁹

12  "내 형제들아 어찌 무화과 나무가 감람 열매를, 포도 나무가 무화과를 맺겠느뇨 이와 같이 짠 물이 단 물을 내지 못하느니라"

12  Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olive berries; or a vine, figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

12  나의 형제들아, 무화과나무가 올리브 열매를, 포도나무가 무화과를 맺을 수 있겠느냐? 그와 같이 짠물과 단물을 다 내는 샘은 없느니라.

13  Who⁵¹⁰¹ is a wise man⁴⁶⁸⁰ and²⁵³² endued with knowledge¹⁹⁹⁰ among¹⁷²² you?⁵²¹³ let him show¹¹⁶⁶ out of¹⁵³⁷ a good²⁵⁷⁰ conversation³⁹¹ his⁸⁴⁸ works²⁰⁴¹ with¹⁷²² meekness⁴²⁴⁰ of wisdom.⁴⁶⁷⁸

13  너희 중에 지혜와 총명이 있는 자가 누구뇨 그는 선행으로 말미암아 지혜의 온유함으로 그 행함을 보일찌니라

13  Who is wise and knowing among you? Let him show his works by his good conduct with meekness of wisdom.

13  너희 가운데 현명하고 지식을 갖춘 자가 누구냐? 그는 선한 행실을 통하여 지혜의 온유함으로 자신의 행함을 나타내 보일지니라.

14  But¹¹⁶¹ if¹⁴⁸⁷ ye have²¹⁹² bitter⁴⁰⁸⁹ envying²²⁰⁵ and²⁵³² strife²⁰⁵² in¹⁷²² your⁵²¹⁶ hearts,²⁵⁸⁸ glory²⁶²⁰ not,³³⁶¹ and²⁵³² lie⁵⁵⁷⁴ not against²⁵⁹⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ truth.²²⁵

14  그러나 너희 마음 속에 독한 시기와 다툼이 있으면 자랑하지 말라 진리를 거스려 거짓하지 말라

14  But if you have bitter jealousy and strife in your hearts, do not glory and lie against the truth.

14   만일 너희 마음 속에 독한 시기와 다툼이 있으면 자랑하지 말며, 진리를 거슬러 거짓말하지 말라.

15  This³⁷⁷⁸ wisdom⁴⁶⁷⁸ descendeth²⁷¹⁸ not³⁷⁵⁶ from above,⁵⁰⁹ but²³⁵ is earthly,¹⁹¹⁹ sensual,⁵⁵⁹¹ devilish.¹¹⁴¹

15  이러한 지혜는 위로부터 내려온 것이 아니요 세상적이요 정욕적이요 마귀적이니

15  This is not the wisdom coming down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

15   이러한 지혜는 위로부터 내려오는 것이 아니라 땅에 속한 것이요, 정욕적이며 마귀적인 것이니라.

16  For¹⁰⁶³ where³⁶⁹⁹ envying²²⁰⁵ and²⁵³² strife²⁰⁵² is, there¹⁵⁶³ is confusion¹⁸¹ and²⁵³² every³⁹⁵⁶ evil⁵³³⁷ work.⁴²²⁹

16  시기와 다툼이 있는 곳에는 요란과 모든 악한 일이 있음이니라

16  For where envying and strife are, there is confusion and every foul deed.

16   이는 시기와 다툼이 있는 곳에는 혼란과 온갖 악한 일이 있기 때문이라.

17  But¹¹⁶¹ the³⁵⁸⁸ wisdom⁴⁶⁷⁸ that is from above⁵⁰⁹ is²⁰⁷⁶ first^{4412, 3303} pure,⁵³ then¹⁸⁹⁹ peaceable,¹⁵¹⁶ gentle,¹⁹³³ and easy to be entreated,²¹³⁸ full³³²⁴ of mercy¹⁶⁵⁶ and²⁵³² good¹⁸ fruits,²⁵⁹⁰ without partiality,⁸⁷ and²⁵³² without hypocrisy.⁵⁰⁵

17  오직 위로부터 난 지혜는 첫째 성결하고 다음에 화평하고 관용하고 양순하며 긍휼과 선한 열매가 가득하고 편벽과 거짓이 없나니

17  But the wisdom that is from above is first truly pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

17  그러나 위로부터 오는 지혜는 첫째, 순수하고 그 다음은 화평하며, 친절하고, 양순하며, 자비와 선한 열매들로 가득하고, 편견이 없고, 위선이 없나니

18  And¹¹⁶¹ the fruit²⁵⁹⁰ of righteousness¹³⁴³ is sown⁴⁶⁸⁷ in¹⁷²² peace¹⁵¹⁵ of them³⁵⁸⁸ that make⁴¹⁶⁰ peace.¹⁵¹⁵

18  화평케 하는 자들은 화평으로 심어 의의 열매를 거두느니라

18  And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

18  의의 열매는 화평케 하는 자들의 화평 안에 뿌려진 것이니라.
